Token account cleanup
How to Close Empty Solana Token Accounts
An empty token account has no token balance but may still occupy on-chain storage and retain rent-exempt SOL. Closing accounts you no longer need can simplify your wallet and return eligible rent to your balance.
Token accounts are different from your wallet
Your wallet address can own many token accounts—often one for each mint you have received. Closing one of these accounts does not close your wallet. If you receive that token again later, a compatible application can create a new associated token account.
How to find and close empty accounts
Use a wallet cleanup scan to review accounts before signing anything.
- 1Open the SOLBurner Cleanup page and connect your wallet.
- 2Let the scanner identify empty or cleanup-eligible token accounts.
- 3Review every account, token mint, and estimated rent amount.
- 4Select only accounts you no longer need.
- 5Approve the close transaction and verify its confirmation.
Why empty accounts accumulate
Airdrops, swaps, NFT activity, and decentralized applications can create token accounts over time. Selling or transferring the full balance does not automatically close the account, so active wallets can accumulate many empty entries.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to close an empty associated token account?
Usually, if it has no balance and no application still relies on it.
Can the same token account be created again?
Yes. If needed later, a new associated token account for that mint will be created, requiring rent and a transaction fee.
Why did my SOL increase after closing accounts?
Eligible rent-exempt lamports held by the closed accounts were returned back to your wallet.
